Located 8 miles south of Deep Creek Lake is the historic Oakland, Maryland. This town is the county seat for Garrett County, Maryland and features a variety of local shops, museums, restaurants, and activities.

Downtown Oakland is home to unique small businesses, local restaurants, popular festivals, farmers markets, and so much more. Stopping by for a quick day trip around town is at the top of our list of things to do in the Deep Creek area. That classic small-town feel is hard to beat, and you never know what treasures you will find in one of the antique stores.

 

During summer months, stop by the farmer's market for some fresh foods and flowers. In October, Oakland hosts the annual Autumn Glory festival. This 5 day event highlights the beauty of the fall foliage with a variety of events like parades, craft shows, and art exhibits. Winterfest is also a popular festival which takes place in February. During Winterfest, you can go for a sleigh ride, view ice carvings around town, and listen to outdoor music.

 

If you're more of a history buff, try checking out one of the museums in town. The Garrett County Historical Museum, Transportation Museum, and the Oakland B&O Museum each showcase different aspects of Garrett County history.
